Benefits of Log Home Pictures
From a distance most log homes look very attractive. A cabin set along a river’s bank or nestled in a field of wild flowers is picturesque, but closer inspection may reveal another story. The use of log home pictures can reveal many secrets of the home and help a buyer discern between a lower quality manufacturer and a high quality one. So here are some thing to look for in photos.
The first is to find a website with lots of photos. If only a few pictures are seen, then ask for more. If a company has been in business for many years then they may have thousands of photos in their archives. Once you have a good selection to browse through, begin looking at detail. In the full home length shots consider if the homes have log timbers for the roof and how large the timbers are. Less expensive log companies may only provide logs for the walls while the homeowner has to purchase standard trusses for the roof system. This style of construction is structurally OK but it is not as classic as the log or timber roof system with cathedral ceilings in the home. When timbers are present in the roof, be aware that the thicker the timbers the higher the quality. Skinny little timbers that resemble pretzel sticks are not as impressive as a thirteen inch log over home.
Corners are another tell tale indicators of quality. When a log home corner is constructed with every other log end showing on each side, that style is called ‘butt and pass’. When every log end is visible on both sides of the corner, it is a ‘full saddle notch’ corner. The butt and pass is less expensive to construct. It is also does not seal as tightly as a full saddle notch. Usually less expensive log home kits come in this style. The full saddle notch are more involved and do usually cost more than the butt and pass. More cutting is required. But even full saddle notches can have their problems. When looking at the corner be sure to look at the joint where the log corner meets. You want to see all of the logs stacking snugly together without gaps. Also the log ends should be inspected. Do the logs stack straight and true or do the butt ends gap or pull apart.
Log home pictures provide a glimpse into the secrets of the logs themselves. We all want quality at a reasonable price, so do some research yourself. Don’t just listen to what the company owner says. Instead pay attention to details. In the long run your handcrafted log home will be of a much better quality.
