Buying a new kitchen can be a major investment. Although the price has come down substantially in recent years it is still going to cost you quite a bit to renovate your kitchen or install a completely new one. With that in mind it pays not to rush into any purchase without first making a plan. Just getting started can seem daunting but look at these tips designed to help you through the first stages of that process.

Get your ideas together before you buy anything. Visiting a handful of DIY stores and specialist kitchen suppliers is usually a great way to obtain new ideas. Happily you can also use the internet to browse all types of kitchens very quickly. The idea is to gather ideas that you like and begin to think of the styles of units and kitchen doors you think will make up your new design. Viewing a lot of pictures is a fantastic way to have a visible image of precisely how the new kitchen area can look along with the various elements in position.

Even before you start purchasing, it’s important to get correct measurements of your kitchen area. Create a very simple picture to point out the position of windows and doors. This process helps you to save time and is great for planning. When you are not really confident with your measuring skills it is a good idea to do it roughly for planning purposes. Before ordering get a store rep. or kitchen fitter to take the final measurements. Too often poor measurements lead to needing to return and reorder units causing delays and costing you money. The measurements you use for ordering is crucial.

Another thing to remember even before you go near a shop is to set a practical budget. Select how much you really can afford along with what you’re willing to spend on your kitchen area. It can be easy to get carried away when you look at some of the fantastic modern kitchens available. Already have an honest concept of what you desire prior to going close to a store assistant; you ought to make the choices not these guys. Don’t forget his or her job is always to promote to you what is actually ideal for them and quite a few operate on commission. Make an effort to be able to keep any spending plan realistic and you will not have any difficulties having a good kitchen area.

Let’s start by getting something out of the way. Odds are pretty slim that you have any cookware in your house that is solid copper. There are pieces in existence, but it is rare in everyday use.

There are a couple downfalls to consider when thinking about copper. For starters, it will react poorly with acidic food. This reaction will add a taste to your food that you probably weren’t expecting. Feeling brave? Cook a tomato slice on copper and taste the difference (DON’T ACTUALLY DO THIS).

Copper also tarnishes when exposed to air and heat, turning from a brilliant copper shine to a dull brown. If you REALLY let your copper go it will turn green, like the copper Statue of Liberty.

The nice thing about copper, and the reason it is sought after in cooking, is that it conducts heat quickly and efficiently. This keeps the heat spread evenly on copper cookware and makes for excellent cooking.

So how do we take copper to the next level?

Copper Exterior Pots and Pans

One step up from solid copper would be something you’re much more likely to find: copper exterior.
This option allows the heat spreading powers of copper to be utilized while removing the flavor altering possibilities.

Generally, you’ll find this type of cookware with a stainless steel cooking surface.

While this is a step up, the exterior still remains open to oxidation and tarnish. Let’s take it up another notch.

Copper Bottom Pots and Pans

Although it might not be that much of a level switch, copper bottom cookware does offer a slight advantage. Not only will you still get heat conducting well on the cooking surface, there is less copper overall. Copper bottoms are generally found, again, on stainless steel cookware. Since stainless steel is easy to clean, this make overall maintenance less of a hassle.

You’ll still have copper tarnish to deal with, but less surface area to worry about polishing and cleaning.

How do we take copper cooking to its full potential?

Copper Core Pots and Pans

The best way I could find was by using All Clad Copper Core pots. This All Clad cookware has the copper on the inside, between two stainless steel layers. It has all of the conductivity bonuses of copper without exposure to air. Win, win.

As you go up in level, you also go up in price. Whatever your spending limit may be, you should be able to find copper cookware out there that is right for you. I know I did!

Plastic is one of the most popular materials in the 21st century. So when it comes to your storage and organization needs, it would not be a surprise that plastic storage cubes are on top of the list and for very good reasons: It is inexpensive to produce. It is convenient. Plastic is lightweight and portable as compared to bins made of metal or wood. It is a strong material that can carry large amounts of weight. Plus, plastic is airtight and water resistant. It does not corrode like metal or be infested by termites like wood. Plastic can be molded into every size, color and design imaginable, so your choices are not limited. High quality plastic will last you many years. Most of all, it is easy to maintain—cleaning plastic is a cinch.

Choosing plastic storage will depend on what you intend to use it for. Ask yourself, what size and quantity of items will you store it with? Will you be storing lightweight items like accessories, or medium weight things like books, or heavier stuff like luggage? You can then have a mental idea on how big you want your plastic storage bin will be.

Another factor to consider is what storage cubes design you want. You can have your plastic containers clear or in different colors. Some people prefer clear containers so they easily identify the contents without having to open the container. Others prefer colored containers, so that from the color they can categorize the items they will store there. Or, they simply want the containers to match their room’s wall decor.

Estimate the weight of the items you will be storing in your storage cubes furniture Although plastic is strong and durable, keeping a heavy object in it is probably not a good idea—unless you intend it to keep in one corner of the room or closet indefinitely. What if you need to move the wardrobe storage to another location? Cube storage are the ideal closet organizer tools and can help maximize closet potential in any home. In fact IKEA closet systems utilize a lot of cube storage to help maximize every square inch of the closet.

Aside from keeping clothing, accessories and memorabilia, cubes are also helpful in the kitchen. You can store condiments and ingredients in them. Plastic containers are airtight, thus it is vital to helping prevent food spoilage. Smaller plastic cubes are used in order to storing and transporting food to school, work, etc.

There are several hundreds more uses for storage cubes. It’s a practical way to store your stuff that you only use occasionally, such as seasonal items—like winter clothing, Christmas décor and Halloween costumes. It can also be used to keep old photographs, scrapbooks, documents, letters and other memorabilia for safety. The uses of these plastic storage cubes are plentiful; you won’t run out of items to store it with. These storage cubes are the solution to keeping a neat and clutter-free home. Go online to buy your own set of plastic cube storage or you can buy at any local hardware store.

This guide will help homeowners to be able to get the cheapest buildings and contents insurance quotes. Homeowners can definitely beat their current home insurance policy costs, so long as their circumstances have not changed recently.

Homeowners will find that visiting a home insurance comparison website does have its benefits. They can compare each policy and review the features and benefits, making sure that they fit your needs. Buildings and contents insurance is two policies combined and you may find that you can get a discount when you buy them together. You can see discounts, incentives, level of cover and extra features such as accidental damage and personal possessions cover. Plus, owners can see what interest rate their monthly payment option incurs. Overall, a comparison table like this is a must for any homeowner who wants to beat their renewal quote. See the AA home insurance review and see what benefits they are offering.

You may also find that some insurers are offering a switching fee penalty payment for new policyholders that incur a charge for canceling their house insurance policy. This fee will come in really handy to homeowners who want to switch to a better home insurance deal with another provider. Homeowners can cancel their policy at any time and don’t have to see it through to the full 12 months. They can switch anytime but may incur a small penalty charge. Consider searching for a provider that offers this kind of deal.

Another way of reducing your house insurance quote is to inform the insurer that you have a security alarm fitted currently at your property. Insurers will reduce the cost of your premium if you home is protected by a burglar alarm. So if you haven’t already got one, you should definitely consider getting one installed.

Try and pay more in excesses on your buildings and contents insurance policy than you need too. Potentially paying out more money in excess payments can reduce your monthly premium substantially.

If you currently have another insurance policy like car or pet with the same provider you may be able to get another discount from insurer when you also buy buildings and contents insurance from them as well. The comparison table will have this information so watch out and see who is currently offering a multi-product discount.

I hope this guide can help homeowners achieve a bigger saving when they renew or purchase a buildings and contents insurance policy.

From a distance most log homes look very attractive. A cabin set along a river’s bank or nestled in a field of wild flowers is picturesque, but closer inspection may reveal another story. The use of log home pictures can reveal many secrets of the home and help a buyer discern between a lower quality manufacturer and a high quality one. So here are some thing to look for in photos.

The first is to find a website with lots of photos. If only a few pictures are seen, then ask for more. If a company has been in business for many years then they may have thousands of photos in their archives. Once you have a good selection to browse through, begin looking at detail. In the full home length shots consider if the homes have log timbers for the roof and how large the timbers are. Less expensive log companies may only provide logs for the walls while the homeowner has to purchase standard trusses for the roof system. This style of construction is structurally OK but it is not as classic as the log or timber roof system with cathedral ceilings in the home. When timbers are present in the roof, be aware that the thicker the timbers the higher the quality. Skinny little timbers that resemble pretzel sticks are not as impressive as a thirteen inch log over home.

Corners are another tell tale indicators of quality. When a log home corner is constructed with every other log end showing on each side, that style is called ‘butt and pass’. When every log end is visible on both sides of the corner, it is a ‘full saddle notch’ corner. The butt and pass is less expensive to construct. It is also does not seal as tightly as a full saddle notch. Usually less expensive log home kits come in this style. The full saddle notch are more involved and do usually cost more than the butt and pass. More cutting is required. But even full saddle notches can have their problems. When looking at the corner be sure to look at the joint where the log corner meets. You want to see all of the logs stacking snugly together without gaps. Also the log ends should be inspected. Do the logs stack straight and true or do the butt ends gap or pull apart.

Log home pictures provide a glimpse into the secrets of the logs themselves. We all want quality at a reasonable price, so do some research yourself. Don’t just listen to what the company owner says. Instead pay attention to details. In the long run your handcrafted log home will be of a much better quality.

There is a huge range of silicone bakeware with cake tins, loaf tins and muffin tins to name but a few. Add to this the range of accessories such as pot holders, spatulas and oven mitts, you really do have an extensive range of silicone bakeware to choose from. A quick visit to any kitchen gadgets store will open your eyes to all of the amazing products on the market.

Most silicone cookware is practically indestructible, as silicone is hard wearing, heat proof and very easy to keep clean. Any utensils you have that are either made of silicone such as spatulas, or coated in silicone such as whisks will last for years, and won’t show any signs of aging or wear and tear no matter how much you use it. The ranges of silicone bakeware are extensive, so if you are an avid baker you will find there are cake tins to suit all needs. Deep fruit cake tins, sandwich tins, and even Savarin tins are all available in the flexible silicone bakeware range.

The silicone muffin tray is incredibly popular as it allows you to pop the muffins out quickly and easily without running the risk of breaking them, or leaving chunks behind in the tin. They come in either 6 or 12 cup sizes and are also available in shallower cup cake style trays. You will also find individual muffin cases should you rather use them, to create larger individual muffins. The brilliant thing about using silicone muffin cases is that they come in such fantastic colours you can leave the muffins in them if you want, and leave people to eat them out of the case as they would a paper case, the added bonus being they are much sturdier to hold, and are much funkier than traditional paper cups.

When you are looking to buy silicone bakeware you will find that there really is a fantastic choice on offer, and you will not only be able to enjoy a great selection of styles and sizes, but also some fantastic colours that will brighten up your kitchen no end.

Almost everybody has heard of accidents that have happened when propane heaters have been used indoors. This is why so many people have turned to electric radiator heaters in the past. However, if propane heating is used properly indoors with sufficient safety precautions taken it does not really pose any harm at all.

If you’re thinking about buying a propane heater for indoor use you should definitely buy one of the newer models available. These have built in safety features that will turn the heater off if oxygen levels are too low in the room. You do need to be careful with older propane heaters, or if you buy a secondhand propane heater, as they may not have these features. It is also a good idea to make sure that your room is sufficiently well ventilated when using this type of heater.

If you use a propane heater that is designated for indoor use and it is fairly new you should not run into any problems with it. However, problems result when people use heaters that have been designed for outdoor use inside instead. Typically, this type of thing happens when someone is camping and they use the outdoor propane heater inside their tent or cabin.

There are definitely benefits to using propane heating indoors. A small propane heater is great to have on hand in case of electricity outages especially during winter when heating is essential in many parts of the world. Some people install larger forced air, fan propane heaters in their living areas and use them for years without any problems. These larger heaters are usually vented and they also have built-in safety devices that will shut them down if there are any problems with the heating or gas levels in the room. Many find this type of heating is actually very cost efficient to run and it is also relatively easy to keep supplied with the liquid petroleum gas that is needed to run the heaters.

Providing you use a newer model propane heater and take any necessary safety precautions needed there is really no problem using propane heating indoors.

*This is a guest post.

How many glass candle holders do you have? Have any for pillar candles? What about glass votive candle holders?

From where I am sitting now, I can see two glass candle holders for tea light candles and three glass taper candle holders. There were more yesterday, but I moved three glass votive candle holders and two other glass tea light candle holders out of sight to prepare for the fall decorations. The five I can see is actually a low count for me.

You see, I love glass. I love the way it can be formed into any number of useful and useless items. I have, on display as I write this, four artist blown glass ball ornaments, a glass pumpkin, glass vases, glass decanters, a glass pitcher, glass drinking glasses of various sizes and shapes, a class cross, Venetian glass paperweights, and two empty wine bottles with glass beads around them. Lots of glass, and there is more in the other room.

But, back to glass candle holders. Glass makes an especially good tea light or votive candle holder because the light from the candle can show the patterns and colors of the candle holder better than almost any way to display glass. Glass backed by a window is usually pretty stunning, but the glass candle holders show up well at night and anywhere in the room when the candle inside is lit.

Glass taper candle holders hold the light above the candle holder, and so they are not as spectacular as those candle holders where the candle is down inside. This also applies to most pillar candle holders, although there are wide bowls in which a pillar candle could be burnt, eventually getting below the rim to show the glass lit from within.

Why the title “dozen”? Because I can think of at least two dozen other glass candle holders in my household inventory, and there are undoubtedly more that escape my memory just now. Why all the candle holders, if there are not being used? Because they are glass and beautiful colors. Remember, I told you I love glass.

Bathroom makeovers not only increase the value of your home, but also enhance your daily ritual of getting ready or winding down. To make the most of your bathroom design without spending exorbitant amounts of money, focus your efforts on these three areas.

Bathroom Accessories

One of the quickest and cheapest ways to update your bathroom is by adding a few new bathroom accessories. Invest in a few coordinated guest towels, a rug and shower curtain to soften the space with textiles while simultaneously injecting some color. A brushed nickel or chrome bathroom set, including a toothbrush holder, tissue cover and soap dish, will give your bathroom decor a modern edge. Finally, keep your toiletries organized with wire mesh boxes and drawers.

Walls and Tiles

It’s time to take down that outdated wallpaper and pink or green tile and replace it with a more modern finish. Paint your bathroom walls a solid color, and don’t be afraid of bold or dark shades. Just because the bathroom is a relatively small room doesn’t mean it can’t feel luxurious and dramatic. Another way to add interest and incorporate a practical and waterproof material is by updating your bathroom wall tile. Consider environmentally friendly recycled glass tiles, or stick with the tried-and-true ceramic tiles, which are available in a variety of colors and textures.

Modern Shower Design

Don’t neglect the most functional part of your bathroom – the shower. By designing a modern shower, you can make your bathroom feel like a spa at a luxury hotel. That doesn’t mean you have a spend a lot of money. Install one of the budget-friendly shower inserts or at least consider replacing your old shower doors with a sleek new frameless version. In conjunction with updating your bathroom tile, these small renovations will go a long way to creating a modern bath design that will increase the value of your home and enhance your daily routine.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a patio or any outdoor space at all. When it comes to choosing the right patio flooring, it is necessary to weigh your options carefully. There are a number of choices in patio flooring, each of which have their own pros as well as con and it always boils down to your personal preference as well as the allocated budget.

Here are some tips in choosing floors for covered patios:

Consider prevailing weather conditions

Outdoor areas of the house are more exposed to the elements which means that the patio needs to have a stable flooring structure that will not easily yield to heat and moisture. For the most part, tiles are preferred because they are sturdy and cheap but they do not necessarily make for a perfect choice all the time.

Measure the total area of the patio

Taking down the exact measurement of the patio is essential in order to find out how much flooring material is needed. This has a direct relationship with cost since larger space would naturally require more flooring.

Get an accurate estimate of the cost

Whichever flooring type you choose, it is wise to know how much the materials and construction will cost along with the time frame for the installation of floors. It is also beneficial to consider alternative materials if you are on a shoestring budget.

Wood versus Tiles

Wood has always been considered as the best material for flooring as it is sturdy and durable. In addition, its aesthetic value is incomparable. However, it can be a little expensive and the cheaper types of wood are not too reliable against extreme weather conditions.

Tiles on the other hand are extremely reliable and while they are not as elegant looking as wood, they cost a lot less and can last for decades. Before making a final decision, always weigh all the pros and cons and pick whichever one is most practical without having to completely sacrifice style.
