Flowers for the Plant Trellis – Climbing Roses

There are few climbing plants which can equal the variety of flower, scent, foliage and habit to be found amongst the climbing roses. It is possible to choose a variety for almost any position in the garden or for any wall, fence or appropriate plant trellis. The old climbers which are almost unobtainable today are especially suited for rose arbors, arches and pergolas. Some of the early varieties were unique in color at the time they were introduced and really praised. However, some were weak in habit and therefore they have been substituted with roses that are more a lot more reliable but retain the same refinement and elegance.

Climbing roses can be divided into a number of groups:

#1: Noisette Roses

This class was introduced in America is the result of a cross between Musk Roses and China roses by John Champney. A Mr Noisette of Charleston sent a seedling to his brother in Paris in 1817 and thus claimed to being the originator of this particular group. The roses are characterized by delicately fashioned flowers, attractive foliage and a really delicate musk fragrande. They keep flowering throughout the summer.

#2: Climbing Tea Roses

Climbing Tea Roses were developed from roses brought from China between 1809 and 1923. They have wonderful flowers often with scrolled buds, powerful fragrance and usually flower again in the Autumn, which is a real bonus. The name “Tea” derives from the original climbers, which had a perfume similar to freshly harvested tea.

#3: Climbing Bourbon Roses

The Bourbons have large flowers, strong perfume and make attractive and reliable climbers, they will grow on North or East facing aspects.

These tree varieties are really glorious specimens that will add not just beauty to your garden but also a great scent. Make sure to choose the right trellis if you are not growing them against a wall, arbor, arch or fence. A trellis can be a great garden decoration if chosen with care, always taking into account the rest of the elements in the garden or outdoor area.
