Information about Metal Siding
Siding is the name of the material that is used to cover the exterior of a house or building. It forms the outer shell which is also known as cladding. The major purpose of siding is to protect a property from the elements and to keep its contents safe. All Siding should be effective at making sure water is kept out of a property, preventing damage to the interior. The materials most often used to construct siding or cladding are wood, plastic, masonry, metal or composite material. A common issue when installing metal siding is joining the separate panels which fit together tightly enough so the wind and rain is kept out but at the same time also allow sufficient room so that the siding materials can contract or expand under different temperatures. There are many ways to solve these problems including overlapping the individual sheets, sealing the joints or using some form of interlocking joining mechanism such as tongue and groove technique.
Sheet metal siding is a popular choice and can be obtained in a large range of sizes and colors. Metal siding is produced from different kinds of metal depending on what exactly it will be used for. Galvanized steel is a common option for use in commercial or industrial buildings along with corrugated metal siding produced from aluminum. Aluminum siding provides better resistance to corrosion and is often used in coastal areas as a defense against the effects of salt water on metal. It will react with oxygen producing aluminum oxide, a coating that is highly durable and will seal the surface of the metal siding well. Alternatively steel will often rust after a number of years even when treated with a substance such as zinc to help resist corrosion prior to installation. Rusting weakens the steel considerably and will also give a property a poor, neglected appearance. Steel does have one advantage over aluminum siding as it is more resistant to dents. This makes it a sensible choice in areas which are prone to frequent storms.
Although metal siding is most often used during the construction of commercial and industrial properties its usage in residential buildings has recently increased now that wide varieties of siding are on offer. Metal house siding can be installed which will have the design and appearance of less durable but more visually pleasing materials like wood. Many houses are built using metal roofing and siding products to take advantage of the various benefits of using metal materials such as their strength, long life expectancy and ease of transportation. Obviously metal siding and roofing materials also come have the highest levels of fire resistance available meaning that they are safer than almost all other materials on the market.
