Unfinished Pine Wardrobe

Purchasing an unfinished pine wardrobe can be a satisfying experience. Allow me to elaborate on what I mean through this post.

Nothing says country better than knotty pine. However, from a structural point of view, remember that too many knots or having holes in the knots weakens the wood and shelving made with knotty pine cannot hold as much weight as clear pine. Clear pine works well with contemporary and Asian style and with slight adornment can be made to fit any décor.

If you think of yourself as an uncreative person and all you want is a simple durable finish on a wardrobe for your bedroom, buying unfinished can still make sense if you have the time to spray on one of several plastic based clear coatings available at any big box store. You may choose to wax your unfinished pine with either light or dark wax. (You can go the naked pine route, but be sure to avoid any form of moisture on or near the wardrobe as pine will drink in the moisture and expand and stain.)  By buying an unfinished wardrobe, you will have saved yourself some money and have the pine wardrobe of your dreams. And saying “I did it myself” is very satisfying.

On the other hand, for creative/crafty types, buying an unfinished wardrobe can be like opening a very large can of “OH, Wonderful”. For you, putting on that decorative finish is fun, even if it takes a month to complete. It is worth it in the end! A faux finish, staining, antiquing, painting in any style, adding mirrors, decoupaging, or adding words to inspire you as you choose your daily attire.

The size of a wardrobe is generally determined by the space available in the room. If you have unlimited space you can find unfinished pine wardrobes that are L shaped and can cover two walls and have lots of drawers. Now that is a lot of storage! Door styles differ, some have inserts or panels, some have beveled edges, some are hinged, and some are sliders. Go with pine. You will think that you can smell a pine forest in your own bedroom. I hope that this pine wardrobe guide has been useful for you!
